Theatre REVIEW: The Show for Young Men - ★★★★

The Show for Young Men is a funny and moving dance performance about friendship.

Robbie (45) is here to work. Alfie (11) is here to have fun. They meet on a building site at dawn. Using playground games, risk-taking and mischief, they dance and play together, discovering that there are many ways to be brave and kind.

Directed by Eoin McKenzie in collaboration with Robbie Synge and young performer Alfie, the show explores familiar and unexpected ideas about masculinity, connections and friendship.

Ailie (Age 15) - ★★★★★

"The Imaginate show called The Show for Young Men is a piece of physical theatre. I found the way the performers used the set really cool. My favourite bits were when the performers talked about their relationship with each other, also when they were rolling around in the barrels as it looked fun from the audience's perspective and it made me want to do that too. I would rate this show 5 stars as I enjoyed it and it was one of the best Imaginate shows I can remember seeing."

Olivia (Age 13) - ★1/2

"The show for young men seemed to be more suited for young children but was also extremely hard to follow.

It started with a young kid and a man playing with pool noodles and dancing. There is only two actors in the show. Some of the dance moves were impressive but most were quite simple.

There was the sound of  football scores coming from the radio, playing the entire time. I didn't understand what was happening at any point and was quite confused.

Near the start the child actor hid in the audience and the adult actor had to try and find him which was fun.

But overall I'd give this show 1 ½ stars. It's definitely not for everyone."

Stewart - ★★★★★

"Wonderful show with a lovely message. Some profound moments within the piece as well. The two dancers were fantastic and clearly had a good bond from creating the piece. Little Alfie was a star so he's giving the extra 5th star for this review. His dancing in the final moments was mesmerising.

Was quite nice sitting beside 4 boys from Mix Up who all bang to the beat of their own drum as well and I did have a bit of a smile when Robbie was trying to get the work done and Alfie's just playing about. Been there!

Students got to meet Alfie after the show as well."
