As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.

Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from film critics. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial hit.

The film maintained its popularity over the years. Additionally, the soundtrack to the film has since become one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date.

A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, was released 36 years later to greater critical and commercial success.

"I watched Top Gun 1986 and I really enjoyed it. The filming was amazing for a movie made so long ago and it was good how at the end maverick decided to stay in Top Gun and become an instructor. I really liked the planes and I would give the movie 4 stars."
