Updated: Aug 9, 2023

Writer: Christopher Nolan

Stars: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy.

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

Dunkirk portrays the evacuation with little dialogue, as director Christopher Nolan sought instead to create suspense from cinematography and music.

It is the highest-grossing World War II film, making $526 million worldwide. Dunkirk received praise for its screenplay, direction, musical score, sound effects, and cinematography; some critics called it Nolan's best work, and one of the greatest war films.

Director Christopher Nolan often uses the same actors in his films, take a look at Oppenheimer, and The Dark Knight trilogy where you'll find regular collaborators Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.

Similar war movies come with the less successful and rather soapy Pearl Harbor. War movies set at sea include Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (also starring James D'Arcy).

Cillian Murphy pops up again at sea in a true story that inspired Moby Dick with In the Heart of the Sea about a whaling ship that is sunk by a giant whale.

Finally the 2010 Robin Hood movie was updated with gritty war style.

Meanwhile one of our favourite films is the WWII drama Empire of the Sun.
