A young boy and his grandmother have a run-in with a coven of witches and their leader.
It is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl and is the second feature-length adaptation of the novel.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who mostly praising the performances and visuals but criticized its script, deeming it inferior to Nicolas Roeg's first film despite being more faithful to the book.

There's some fantastic female villains in kids movies including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Shrek 2, Finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid and of course the first adaptation of The Witches. For more successful Roald Dahl adaptations try Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Octavia Spencer lends vocals to animal filled Zootropolis. For less successful book adaptations there's Pirates! Band of Misfits and Around the World in 80 Days.
