A mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back.

Shrek was widely praised by critics for its animation, voice performances, soundtrack, writing and humor, which critics noted simultaneously catered to both adults and children.

The film's success helped establish DreamWorks Animation as a prime competitor to Pixar in feature film computer animation. Three sequels were released—Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010)—along with a spin-off film and other productions within the Shrek franchise.

Eddie Murphy plays a wise-cracking comedy sidekick Donkey who falls in love with a dragon but before that he played a wise-cracking comedy sidekick dragon in Mulan. There's an even more dangerous dragon to deal with in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

There's plenty more Shrek and co in the Shrek series including the recent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Meanwhile for more Princess Fiona style twists on the fairy tale princess check out Frozen and Tangled.

The writers of Shrek also contributed to the Pirates of the Caribbean series which has a similar adventure comedy vibe.

Meanwhile check out the highly rated Sing 2 for more talking animals.
