The film reboots the Batman film series, telling the origin story of Bruce Wayne from the death of his parents to his journey to become Batman and his fight to stop Ra's al Ghul and the Scarecrow from plunging Gotham City into chaos.

It received highly positive reviews from critics, who deemed the film an improvement over the Joel Schumacher films, with praise aimed at the more mature tone and character-driven storyline, Bale's performance, musical score, direction, the deeper psychological focus and added layers of depth to the titular character's motives and the emotional weight compared to previous Batman films.

It was followed by The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), with the three films constituting The Dark Knight Trilogy.

For less superheroes in your crime action films have a look at Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Meanwhile director Christopher Nolan tends to use a lot of the same ensemble cast in his movies including Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Meanwhile there's more excellent work from Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption and Christian Bale does excellent vocal work in The Boy and the Heron.
