The global phenomenon National Theatre production War Horse returns to Edinburgh for a strictly limited run.
A theatrical journey like no other
Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.
At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in No Man’s Land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find Joey and bring him home.

"Wow what a performance! The puppetry was amazing, as expected. The acting had so much passion and, well all of it was so good. It had it all - emotion, comedy and it scared the living hell out of me. So 5 stars easy, not even close."
Max (Age 13) - ★★★★★
"The puppetry was breathtaking, the sound and lighting were well coordinated and enhanced the scenes to make them feel real and immersive.
The friendship and admiration between Albert and his horse Joey were key and told very well. Even though it was serious there were funny parts that lightened the play.
The story was told beautifully and the staging was incredible."

"War horse is one of the most emotional and heartbreaking shows ever! Bring your tissues. The puppetry is outstanding and the puppeteers are incredible! It’s very loud and dramatic but it’s so worth it! It’s so amazing and once you’ve seen it you can tell why it’s award-winning! The way they do the set is incredible! It is so believable and the story of friendship and love really hits you hard. Joey and Albert have the strongest friendship ever and that really makes the story even more compelling."
We had a Puppetry workshop with Jessica from Festival Theatre to tie in with the performance...
