Theatre REVIEW: A Play, A Pie & A Pint - Cheapo - ★★★

ree

Cheapo: chess slang for a primitive trap, often set in the hope of swindling a win from a lost position.

After school at his local KFC, Jamie is setting up to play chess with his best pal as usual. But his class-mate Kyla turns up instead, forcing Jamie to play with her as she needs something from him that her whole life depends on.

As they place their pieces on the board, Jamie and Kyla also piece together the night that changed both of their lives, which is anything other than black and white.

Cheapo is a new high-stakes drama by Katy Nixon, current winner of the David MacLennan Award, about two teenagers growing up in a world that treats them like adults.ancing, mothers and their daughters, and the importance of securing a win at any cost.

Stewart - ★★★

"This week's A Play, A Pie and A Pint performance takes quite a dark turn as we discover the horrific event at a party which brings two teenagers together discussing the aftermath. The initial set up is well done as we meet the two young characters in a KFC and the word play in Katy Nixon's script between the characters is well portrayed and realistic.

However as the play works it's way on the more fantastical elements awkwardly sit alongside the play's darker elements. The symbolism does get a little heavy handed as well.

Still there's much to be admired in a new piece of theatre that takes risks and pushes boundaries and if the mostly older audience might not be the target audience for a performance like this, the play still leaves an impression and food for thought.

Shout out to that simple, effective set design as well which looked great."
