Theatre REVIEW: Sister Act - ★★★★

Brace yourselves sisters – the habit is coming to Edinburgh

.

Don’t miss this eagerly anticipated brand new production of the Broadway and UK smash hit musical Sister Act direct from London.

All your prayers have been answered with a stunning cast, including TV and stage legend Lesley Joseph, Hairspray favourite Lizzie Bea and West End star Landi Oshinowo as Deloris, everyone’s favourite nun on the run!

Disco diva Deloris’ life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Placed under protective custody she is hidden in the one place she shouldn’t be found – a convent! Encouraged to help the struggling choir, she helps her fellow sisters find their true voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Featuring original music by Tony® and 8-time Oscar® award-winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted) and songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, this heavenly musical is joyous and uplifting in equal measures.

A musical sent from above, Sister Act is the brilliant, must-see show which raises the spirits and warms the soul time after time.

MIX UP REVIEWS:

Stewart - ★★★★

"Definitely a feel-good pick me up for the autumn, Sister Act follows and expands on the '90s hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg. The stakes are somewhat lowered with the musical as the villains are a bit cartoonish but fit in with the vibe of the show overall.

The show looks great and the leading roles by Landi Oshinowo and Lesley Joseph are outstanding, a couple of legends right there! Meanwhile the rest of the cast have a lot of fun playing it up in the comedic support. Special shout out for the understudies on press night, Lori-Haley Fox as Sister Mary Lazarus and Ceris Hine as Sister Martin of Tours - both hilarious and taking the opportunity to nearly steal the show!

The comedy is broad, and in fact probably not as funny as it should be, I think the musical itself is somewhat lacking in jokes and kind of relies on the cast to mug it up. However it's really feel-good entertainment with some toe tapping numbers. Need a cheer up, then go see it!"
