Theatre REVIEW: Just Between Ourselves - ★★★★

Don't miss the only Scottish stop on the UK tour of Just Between Ourselves!
It is 1976. Dennis tinkers in his garage, cheerfully indifferent to wife Vera’s impending breakdown. Marjorie hovers in the background, making tea and finding fault. Neil has planned a birthday surprise for his wife, but Pam doesn’t share his enthusiasm, preoccupied by frustrations of her own.
In perhaps his most emotionally charged play, Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn masterfully evokes a world of hidden tensions and suppressed hostility, expertly navigating the tightrope between comedy and tragedy.

"Excellent performances in this fine cast of five through Ayckburn's delightfully quirky and slightly melancholy chamber piece. Tom Richardson in particular gives a wonderful likeability as the cheeky chappy Dennis who tinkers away in his garage, constantly looking on the upside of life whilst avoiding the reality of what is happening to his wife, who is slowly slipping away mentally. The set is claustrophobic but detailed and brings an added element of depth to the play that tinkers itself between comedy and tragedy in a way very similar to a Mike Leigh film. Very well done and a memorable piece of theatre."
